Essay on Literacy

February 11th, 2010 admin No comments

Writing is used as a method of communication. In order to communicate with others their must be a connection between the reader and the writer. I learned how to achieve this connection by appealing to how the reader might feel. My personal development of my essays is highly influenced by my ninth grade teacher, Mrs. McKeller. Mrs. McKeller taught me that without gaining a reader’s respect, my own viewpoints are underappreciated and disregarded. Since receiving her advice I am a more confident writer.

When I was in ninth grade I was so non expressive. I did not write with a lot of confidence, so my papers lacked a part of my personality. I remember one incident where I had to write an autobiography about myself and briefly mention someone that had an impact on my life. I was horrified by the words “autobiography” because I hated to talk about myself. I am an extremely analytical writer so this task was very hard for me. For once in my life I was finally analyzing myself. Writing about myself showed me that it is okay to talk about sadness and heartache and the pressure that life brings. Sometimes, I guess it is okay to just relax and let people in to know the real me. Read more…

Immigration Essay

September 14th, 2009 admin No comments

Immigration is what has made America what it is today. In fact, there would be no America if not for immigration because everyone in the country is an immigrant or is directly descended from one. Even the oldest inhabitants, the Native Americans, emigrated from Asia. The rest of us come from all different places in the world. Countries such as England, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, China, Germany, and many others have all contributed to populate the United States. Immigration started with our nation’s beginning and it hasn’t seen and had continued for every year since. Each wave of immigrant brings new ideas and cultures as the people integrate with other Americans. Immigration is definitely a necessity, however if uncontrolled, it can also have devastating effects on the country’s economy and population. Therefore, immigration is only good, if it is limited immigration. I believe the policy on immigration the country currently holds is controlled and a good policy. Read more…

Essay on Career Goals

September 10th, 2009 admin No comments

My dream job would be owning and operating a bakery. I enjoy baking bread and do it well. I cannot imagine a better way to earn a living, than by turning a hobby into a profitable business? Three major obstacles stand in my way, the knowledge and skill to run a retail business, the finances to begin and maintain it, and the personal confidence required to leap into such an endeavor. I have already addressed these concerns by taking a management position in retail food service, keeping my financial house in order, and completing a paralegal certification program. Although these steps have narrowed the gap between my goal and me, I believe a Bachelor’s in Business Management will help bring me within reach. It will do so by providing me with the educational foundation to run a business successfully, improving my financial situation, and improving my self-confidence. These three barriers are not unique to me. On the contrary, they are well documented as difficulties many entrepreneurs face as they launch a new business. Read more…

Essay on Hamlet

August 31st, 2009 admin No comments

Much has been said about whether or not Hamlet is insane, but I believe that there is more to Hamlet’s strange behavior than simply insanity. He struggles to kill Claudius because there is an internal conflict of personality where part of him wants to obey his father to the fullest, and part of him is hesitant because he does not feel that he has the guts to commit murder, especially when the proof he has of his father’s death is contestible.

When Hamlet hears of the sighting of his father’s ghost, he is eager to meet his father because he loves him very much. He begs the guards to take him to the ghost, and when they do, Hamlet insists on going to talk with him despite warnings by the guards. Hamlet’s eagerness to follow his father shows his respect and love for him, and indicates that Hamlet is willing to take risks to succumb to his father’s demands.

When the ghost tells Hamlet to murder Claudius, he shows no signs of hesitation. He proclaims that “I, with wings as swift as meditation or the thoughts of love, may sweep to my revenge” (Act I, Scene IV, line 51).

However, had Hamlet been able to keep his promise of swift revenge, the play would have been over with by the second act. Instead, Hamlet spends the rest of the play hesitating and procrastinating on his duty. He hesitates because he is uncertain of whether he is physically capable of committing murder, and he also questions the validity of the ghost’s testimony. How can he be sure that what he saw was really his father’s ghost? How can he be sure that the ghost was even telling the truth? He struggles throughout the play to prove these things to himself. Essay on Pride and Predjudice

The series of  “Pride and Prejudice” creates a fourth layer that cannot be seen in Austin’s novel, which is not said or done but spoken physically through body language. While Austin positions the reader by accounting the events through the eyes of Elizabeth, she gives the reader the role of an eyewitness. She creates suspense through questioning of Darcy’s character.

The series adapted by Andrew Davies shows the events from a more neutral perspective. With the use of visual, sound, symbolic and editing codes, Davies is able to carefully position the audience and make an impact upon the viewer that offers a more modern role to the viewer. Davies gives the viewer a more independent perspective of both Darcy and Elizabeth. He places reason upon Darcy’s actions and the audience is made to suffer with Darcy, at the same time as being positioned within Elizabeth’s perspective. One does not have to read the novel in order to understand each of the characters and appreciate the beauty and reasons for this story becoming one of the greatest romantic classics of our time. The only film offers a visual account of the tale the novel. Read more…

Paradise Lost Essay

The stories that people today and people back in history have been taught about religion and the fall of Satan are relatively the same. God is the savior, the king, and the almighty power. He is an unseen leader whose power we worship, one who is of an understanding nature and blessed character. What we have been taught about Satan and his followers has never gone far from what the Bible has always told us. Satan is a dark character, a selfish, jealous, and powerless creature that tries to bring people to his hell and make them as miserable as he is himself. It would appear that Milton tried to disprove this assumption- it seems he instead portrayed Satan as a powerful, heroic and magnificent being. God can be interpreted as far and few choose to believe- dark, emotionless, egotistical, and unforgiving. Although this was not necessarily his aim, the way that he wrote it left it open to many different interpretations.

Milton’s word choices and his character development make Satan’s character an object of curiosity. The reader is swayed to be attracted to Satan’s appeal, if not his power. Satan’s character is strong-minded, intellectual, and at times, philosophical. Milton does not portray the fault of Satan’s fall on lack of intelligence, or weakness of character- it is more a simple acceptance of evil. Satan says, “So farewell Hope And with Hope farewell Fear Farewell Remorse: all Good to me is lost Evil be thou my Good,” (Milton, IV. 109-111). Milton summarizes Satan’s acceptance of evil best, saying that the profoundest Hell will receive a new leader, one who possesses a mind that cannot be changed. (I. 29-31) Read more…
