Global Warming Essay

August 25th, 2009 No comments

Global warming is one of the most challenging environmental problems in existence today. It threatens the health of the earth’s inhabitants and the world’s economies every day. With global warming comes longer and more intense heat waves and storms. Along with those climate changes, come more pests which in turn can carry devastating diseases. Forestry and farming are feeling the negative impact of global warming and we’re also seeing traces of a devastated ecosystem. To prevent further damage and begin repairing the damaging effects of global warming, policies must be implemented and diligently enforced.

Energy conservation is the only policy that I would put into effect. This policy would be very broad; encompassing as many aspects of energy use as possible.

The first item on the table would be to force automobile manufacturers to only produce vehicles with high MPG ratings and eventually to develop new models that are not run on gasoline alone. Such vehicles are known as hybrids and are run on a combination of electricity and gasoline. Currently, the technology is available to manufacture cars with 40+ mpg ratings, however, the concern lies with the increasing number of trucks and SUVs that are known worldwide as “gas-guzzlers”. These larger vehicles are becoming more and more prevalent and currently do not meet any efficiency standards. Requiring that all new SUVs and trucks from this point forward be as fuel efficient as their smaller counterparts, would be a large step in the way of vehicle efficiency and pave the way for less gasoline reliance. This in turn will allow for fewer emissions of carbon dioxide from the vehicles that we have all come to rely on for our sole source of transportation. Read more…

Inflation Essay

August 20th, 2009 No comments

Inflation refers to a sustained, general increase in the price of goods and services. Inflation at a very fast rate is hyper inflation, medium is called strato-inflation and low level, creeping inflation. Demand pull inflation is where aggregate demand exceeds aggregate supply. Firms cannot increase supply without increasing prices since the economy is at full employment. Cost push inflation occurs when the costs of the factors of production increase without a equal or greater increase in output. This causes firms to increase the price of their goods and services.

The Human Resources Minister of Malaysia claims that an increase in salaries may boost inflation, costs of production and decrease their competitiveness. He maintains that a decrease in salaries would solve the problem of escalating inflationary pressure. This is a two pronged statement since decreasing wages may deflate the economy however in the long run it may lead to even worse consequences.

If wage rates are decreased this will allow for a decrease in demand pull and cost push inflation. In relation to demand pull inflation (D.P.I) workers salaries may be reduced. Demand pull inflation is caused by an increase in government injections (spending) into the economy or consumer spending (boosted confidence). This would cause aggregate demand (total expenditure) in the economy to fall. This is characterised by decreased consumption since households now have less purchasing power as the nominal value of their money falls. The fall in disposable income will nullify the escalating demand for goods and services since purchasing power has been diminished. Read more…

Leadership Essay

Leadership is a prerequisite for effective management without leadership skills one cannot be an effective manager” Tappen (1985). For the purpose of this assignment the types and characteristics of leadership will be discussed. The author will briefly review the theories of leadership. Particular emphasis will be placed on the difference between transactional and transformational leadership and how it is relevant in modern nursing. The author will also explore why nursing leadership and management is vital in today’s healthcare environment and how changes in healthcare have influenced leadership and management in modern nursing.

Tappen (2001) identifies the difference between management and leadership as follows: There is a close relationship between the concepts of leadership and management. Management is a formal specifically designated position within an organization. Each department and clinical area has a manager who is responsible for the organization of that specific area. Tappen (2001) states “leadership is an unofficially achieved position that may be assumed by more than one person at any one time. Tappen suggests that management is an assigned role, leadership is an attained one”. The literature also acknowledges the concept that all people have untapped leadership potential (Tichy1997). Pressures of College

Student pressure in today’s educational system comes from many different sources. These types of educational pressures can come from family, friends, work, extra-curricular activities and even yourself. People can succeed or fail in today’s educational system depending on how each person takes the pressure. Some take it as a motive to get better grades, and some take it as means of life or death. Pressure can be very dangerous to one’s physical and mental state.

Family pressure usually comes from the parents. Parents pressure their children to get good grades just to see their children have a bright future. Pressure put on children by parents is used to help children, but instead it just hurts them. Parents can sometimes give children the idea that achieving is more important than anything in life. William Zinsser who wrote “College Pressure” says, “They are caught in one of the oldest webs of love and duty and guilt”. Parents would much rather steer their children towards a career of high pay yet children would rather major in a career they like. Parents think that by paying for courses that teach their children how to make money or a profession where they are paid high that their children will never have to worry about their economical state. Zinsser says that, “The pressure on students is severe. They are truly torn. One part of them feels obligated to fulfill their parents’ expectations; after all, their parents are older and presumably wiser. Another part tells them that the expectations that are right for their parents are not right for them”. Read more…

Essay on Pride and Predjudice

August 12th, 2009 No comments

The series of  “Pride and Prejudice” creates a fourth layer that cannot be seen in Austin’s novel, which is not said or done but spoken physically through body language. While Austin positions the reader by accounting the events through the eyes of Elizabeth, she gives the reader the role of an eyewitness. She creates suspense through questioning of Darcy’s character.

The series adapted by Andrew Davies shows the events from a more neutral perspective. With the use of visual, sound, symbolic and editing codes, Davies is able to carefully position the audience and make an impact upon the viewer that offers a more modern role to the viewer. Davies gives the viewer a more independent perspective of both Darcy and Elizabeth. He places reason upon Darcy’s actions and the audience is made to suffer with Darcy, at the same time as being positioned within Elizabeth’s perspective. One does not have to read the novel in order to understand each of the characters and appreciate the beauty and reasons for this story becoming one of the greatest romantic classics of our time. The only film offers a visual account of the tale the novel. Read more…
