The editorial “Tackling childhood obesity” published in the Mercury, presents a strong opinion on Tasmanian children eating their way into obesity and not exercising at a high enough rate. The writer has used the persuasion technique in order to get the parents to feed their children nutritionally and non manufactured fatty foods and agree with what is being said.

The editor has written the column in a pretty serious tone, which demands the readers into having the same views on the subject as the writer does, which shows the tone is used as another method of persuasion. Using this demanding tone readers are more likely to think about the subject and the effects it can have on their children and the community. This is shown by releasing facts on the subject, which tell us about the risks involved. A major thought is ‘researchers have discovered early signs of heart disease by the time they are 10,’ using these facts the article is thought over a lot more by the readers and more action is likely to be taken by the readers.

The column is directly aimed at parents with young children, in an attempt to persuade parents to stop supporting big companies produce manufactured fatty foods which are known as ‘treats’ and are most commonly loved by most children. By directing this article to parents, the supply of these fatty treats to kids is due to decrease if parents are persuaded in a big enough way, to stop feeding children these unhealthy snacks.

Anorexia Nervosa is a severe eating disorder that mainly affects teenage girls, however, it can affect men and women of all ages. There are many factors that contribute to a girl becoming anorexic, including low self-esteem and depression. Common features of anorexia include weight loss and behavior changes. The weight loss is gradual and often starts with a “perfectly normal weight reducing diet.”(Rowan) Although the only person who can cure anorexia is the person that suffers from it, there are some treatment options available today.

Many factors contribute to a girl becoming anorexic. A main one is an attempt to lose excess weight. Most anorexic girls do not have “excess weight” to lose, they only think they do. In fact, most often they are unhealthily thin. Oftentimes, the girl disregards the opinions of others and focuses on losing as much weight as she can. Attempts to make her stop are often met with hostility and even violence.(Rowan, Shelly)

Another key factor that can lead to anorexia is depression. This can be associated with stress/pressure at school, home, or in relationships. Usually, an anorexic teenage girl comes from a family where the pressure to succeed is great. This leads to constant anxiety over big tests such as finals and S.A.T./A.C.T. exams. Because the girl has so much anxiety, problems in relationships often arise. Definition of Autism
Many people get extremely confused when people speak of autism, and they think it is just a childhood disorder. The reason why people think it is just a childhood disorder is because numerous studies focus primarily on educating autistic children, since it is very hard to do so. Autism is a biological disorder coming from the brain that impairs people’s communication and their social skills. It covers an exceedingly broad spectrum of disorders ranging from the very mild to severe. Autistics are described to be living in their “own world” and the high functioning autistics usually have two worlds; the “outside world” and “their world”. Autism can be accompanied with having many serious sensory challenges, such as lack of verbal communication, lack of eye contact, and the inability to hear what others are saying (Harris, 1994).

Siblings of Autistics
Since the definition of autism is so broad and very hard to understand, even for the most intelligent of adults, imagine how it would be for a younger child. The lack of knowledge given to the siblings of children with autism is just one of the many negative factors of having a brother or sister with autism. A siblings bond is very unique and is very important for any person’s life. Siblings usually share similar family experiences with one another, which enables them to form a special bond that lasts for the rest of their lives. A frequently debated topic in today’s society is abortion. Many are for abortion and just as many are against it. There are many different arguments for each case. For example, pro-abortionists may say that, although the decision to have an abortion is never easy, nobody is better suited to make this decision than the mother, but anti-abortionists will say it is the baby’s choice, and as it cannot express its views, it has a right to live and therefore abortion is wrong.

However, every pregnant woman has the right to take control of her fertility, and as no method of contraception is 100% safe, women may still need abortion, because the women has a right to have an active sex life but not have any children. Abortion may be her only option if contraception fails, and this may be viewed as fairer on the child than for it to be born into an un-loving, un-wanting family. We must respect some women’s decision not to have children.

Besides, if a minority group disagrees with abortion, it has no right to force this view on anyone else, everybody should have the right to choose. Some people think a foetus is only a potential human being, but there is no question of the humanity of the woman. So some may say it is better to abort a potential human life than to destroy a human life by allowing the baby to be born. The doctors which perform abortions are not trained ethically or morally so they are in a better position to make the decision to have an abortion. The father’s view should also be considered as he knows the mother well enough to realise if she can handle a baby or not and is also less likely to be as emotionally attached to the foetus at the abortion stage so he may be able to make a sensible decision.
