We have come a long way since the times of snail mail thanks to the advancements in technology. Communication and interactions have become easier and this has made the world a better place to live. Technological advancements, however, are not limited to communication and social interactions alone. Its scope extends to the education sector where tutors and students rely on it for their school work. There have been varying views on the impact of modern technologies in education with respondents raising strong arguments in support of and against the issue. This sample piece discusses the impact of modern technology on students in particular and how it influences their academic performance.

Modern technology supports research and extension. Before technology became a mainstay in the education sector, students would rely on hard copy-books when researching on their academic projects. This was cumbersome and tiring since students would have to make countless trips to a brick library to access research materials. Some of these materials were in short supply and more often than not, scholars would find that the specific books they are after weren’t available. This increased the time one would spend researching on a topic or project since one had to wait for the research materials to be available before proceeding with the assignments. With the advancement in technology, students can now access research materials online free of charge or for a small fee. Technology has also enhanced the quality of research papers since scholars can access countless materials on a specific topic without having to leave their dorms.

Modern technology supports interaction with professors and academic staff. Modern communication channels such as email have made it easy for students to consult their professors on matters pertaining to their classwork or assignments. Students can instantly reach their professors without having to book appointments with their office assistants. At times, when a student needs to be able to complete his or her assignment or project, they need some help from their professors, and modern technology has really simplified this.

Modern technology can distract students from their core purpose in college. Just like anything in life, technology has its advantages and disadvantages; its ability to distract young minds is one of the disadvantages. Modern technology comes with a lot of social and interaction sites such as Facebook and Instagram that can distract students from their core purpose in college – to get an education. Some of these interactive sites are very addictive, and students who are not careful find themselves spending most of their time on those platforms interacting with their friends. Some even miss classes and fail to submit their assignments on time as a result of spending too much time on the social media platforms.

All in all, technology has positively impacted education and students who use it in their right manner can gain a lot from it. They should realize that they are in school for the sole purpose of getting an education and the use of technology in school is to support this agenda.
